A set of 17 hand‑carved ruby figures representing the Buddha’s disciples (Arhats). Each piece is approximately 220 carats, totaling ~3,740 carats for the complete set. UV (365 nm) response and FT‑IR screening support natural corundum (Al₂O₃) colored by Cr³⁺.
Under long‑wave UV (≈365 nm), the ruby exhibits a vivid red luminescence associated with Cr³⁺ activation. This is typical for natural ruby and helps to distinguish it from dye/polymer treatments.
FT‑IR (Fourier‑transform infrared) was used as a screening tool to check for organic fillers/resins and to assess structural consistency. In KIST measurements, no polymer/resin bands were observed in the ~2800–3000 cm⁻¹ (C–H stretch) region and no glass‑filling bands in the ~1000–1100 cm⁻¹ (Si–O) region. The 900–500 cm⁻¹ lattice region is consistent with corundum (Al₂O₃).
Set composition: 17 pieces • Approx. 220 ct per piece • Total weight ~3,740 ct.
